"Gardens are the result of a collaboration between art and nature." — Penelope Hobhouse
Our Lennar home in Cypress, Texas came with landscaping in the front and backyards; however, when you dig a hole for a pool in the backyard, the process trashes the existing sprinkler system and existing grass. So although the pool and outdoor kitchen are not yet finished (seems impossible I know), enough had been completed that it was safe to redo the landscaping.
Using NextDoor.com, I got the names of some local landscapers that my neighbors were happy with. I invited three of them to bid on redoing our landscaping.
From the three potential landscapers, we selected:

because Robert Gates was very professional and knowledgable. He radically improved the designs I had suggested.
Here is how it turned out:
-
Front Yard
We liked having a strong border between the grass and the garden/trees.
-
Front Yard Pathway
We wanted to move our trashcans from being stored in the garage to being stored on the side of the house behind our wooden gate, so one of our requirements was a path from our side gate to our driveway that would allow us to roll the trashcans without having to drag them through the grass.
-
Backyard Pool Area
The pool's rock feature is a focal point, so Cut Above Landscaping adorned it with plants that will not shed leaves into the pool.
-
Backyard Corner Area
Behind our house is a common area with a public path. We wanted something that would be attractive when viewed from the house or viewed from the public path.
-
Backyard Pathway to Gate that Leads to the Common Area
We added a gate so we can exit our backyard and access the common area public path. We have stepping stones so we can access the gate.
-
Pool Equipment
We rocked this area because it's too narrow to get a mower on that side of the house.
Our plants included:
- Front Yard
- Abelia
- Blue Daze
- Dianella
- Drift Roses
- Gardenias
- Japanese Blueberry tree
- Sweet Viburnum
- Backyard
- Agapanthus
- Bulbine
- Dianella
- Drift Roses
- Dwarf Bottlebrush
- Gardenias
- Hibiscus
- Sunshine Ligustrum
- Sweet Viburnum
Thanks to Robert Gates and the whole Cut Above Landscaping crew.
We look forward to enjoying our landscaping now and in the future as it matures and blossoms.
Landscaping is alive in the lab.
