If you’ve ever driven a high-performance car, admired a towering skyscraper, used a smartphone, or watched a great film, chances are you’ve experienced what millions of Autodesk customers are doing with our software. With Autodesk, you have the power to make anything.
Senior Principal Research Scientist, Jos Stam ("a research dude from Toronto"), works in our Autodesk Research group at the Toronto office. Long ago, as a follow up to his SIGGRAPH 1999 paper on “Stable Fluids,” he developed an iPhone application that is a basic solver behind Autodesk Maya called Fluid Effects (FX). Playing with fluid effects is fun on the iPhone.
This was the first iOS app ever released by Autodesk. Jos went way out of his way to make that happen. No one told him to work on it. He developed it with early beta APIs that were completed but then made obsolete by Apple. Before he could declare victory, he had to rewrite swaths of code. He covers the story in Chapter 12 of his book, The Art of Fluid Animation.
For those of you with iPhone, you should check Fluid FX out. It has been rated 4.5 stars out of 5. Just type in Autodesk in the search part in the App Store straight from your device. You can change settings for color, swirl, and gravity. This is fun and looks so real. Don't believe me? See for yourself:
For those of you with a Mac for whom Fluid FX is just not enough fun, you can check out Motion FX:
