Brian Pene is a Director of Engineering. He works on emerging technology in the Office of the CTO. We often joking refer to what he and his team do as "black operations."
Techonomy is a company that believes that technology can make the world a happier, healthier, wealthier, and more peaceful place. As you have probably guessed, their name combines the words “technology” and “economy” because technology has become a central part of the economy in which we operate and the society in which we live. Today, technology is inextricably entwined with just about every activity that humans undertake. Techonomy embraces that fact and seeks to help the world take advantage of it. source: Techonomy.com
Virtual reality is an artificial world consisting of images and sounds created by a computer that is affected by the actions of a person experiencing it. Most first-person video games are examples of virtual reality. Augmented reality is an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device such as a camera on a smartphone. What separates virtual reality from augmented reality is the totally computer-based immersive environment being experienced whereas augmented reality also has the inclusion of the real, physical world in the environment being experienced.
Check out Brian's article on the Techonomy site. It is from December 2015 but could have been written yesterday:
As a company whose software helps people design, make, and use places, things, and media for a better world (who happens to provide its software to students for free), it makes sense to me that Brian focused on:
- Entertainment
- Buildings
- Cars
- Training
- Education
Reality is alive in the lab.
