"When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood"
—"Here Comes the Flood," Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel, 1977.
Autodesk InfraWorks 360 (i.e., automated 3D model building, cloud technology, and specialized features for road, bridge, and drainage design) help civil engineers plan and design transportation infrastructure. It allows them to manage larger-scale infrastructure models created from existing data sources, engineer in context from the start, and generate proposals at the appropriate level of detail.
Project Boulder for InfraWorks 360 is our free limited technology preview that matches the simplicity of two-dimensional (2D) flood simulations together with the immersive 3D models of InfraWorks 360. As a collaborative effort between Autodesk and Hydronia, InfraWorks 360 users have the ability to simulate, visualize, and animate 2D flood events directly in the Autodesk InfraWorks 360 model environment while utilizing the Hydronia RiverFlow2D computation model.
Some of the Project Boulder features include:
- Create Simulation Area and Model Flow and Outflow
- Automatic creation of Simplified Surface Mesh
- Establish a uniform Mannings n value for the model
- Determine the simulation time and increment
- Utilize the Hydronia RiverFlow2D model to perform the simulations
- Animate the resulting flood surface by elevation and depth of velocity in the model
Recently the team provided me with an update. The update includes:
- The technology preview is compatible with the Summer Release of InfraWorks 360.
- It contains two additional features:
- Triangle Size is exposed to the user allowing the user to adjust the size of the mesh triangles that are sent to RiverFlow2D.
- An Additional Outlet type was added.
For existing users to take advantage of this:
- Uninstall your current version of the Project Boulder technology preview.
- Update your InfraWorks 360 to the Summer Release (made available on 06/08/2015)
- Download and install this Project Boulder update (made available 06/22/2015)
- The Hydronia RiverFlow2D component does not need to be changed.
If you are new to the project, you need all 3 parts:
- Update your InfraWorks 360 to the Summer Release (made available on 06/08/2015)
- Download and install this Project Boulder update (made available 06/22/2015)
- Download and install the Hydronia RiverFlow2D component.
Regardless of new or existing users, you can access the project via:
So please give this technology preview a try and tell us what you think. Please let us know at [email protected] or the discussion forum on the project.
Preserving flesh and blood through simulation is alive in the lab.
