Autodesk employees in the United States have the day off in honor of Labor Day. As noted on Wikipedia, Congress enacted the holiday in 1882 as "a day off for working citizens." The holiday signals the end of summer. Many educational institutions start the new school year immediately after this holiday.
Labor Day is the first Monday in September, so it does not always fall on the same date. From the This Day in History site, on this day, September 1, in:
- 1661: The first yacht race, England's King Charles vs his brother James, was held.
- 1838: Unfortunately, William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition died at age 68.
- 1849: The California Constitutional Convention was held in Monterey.

- 1859: The first pullman sleeping car was put into service.

- 1922: A New York City law required all "pool" rooms to change their names to "billiards."
(I guess they had trouble right there in New York City. Trouble that starts with "T," that rhymes with "P," that stands for "pool.") - 1939: Physical Review journal published the first paper to deal with "black holes."
- 1975: The TV show, Gunsmoke, went off the air.
- 1977: The first Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I computer was sold.
- 1979: A Los Angeles Court ordered actor Clayton Moore to stop wearing a Lone Ranger mask.
(I guess when it came time to find jurors sympathetic to his plight, he was alone.) - 1985: A US-French expedition located the wreckage of The Titanic off Newfoundland.
