Project Pinocchio was our technology preview that leveraged Autodesk's powerful 3D design and animation tools so you can create fully-rigged custom 3D characters. You designed a creation of your own or modified existing stock characters using a variety of pre-defined body types, facial features, and clothing styles for inclusion in 3D games, animations, and scenes. You created, customized, and downloaded your very own rigged 3D characters from a catalog of over 100 body types, outfits, hairstyles, and physical attributes in a few simple steps. As a cloud-based solution, all of this was possible with: No download. No install. Just a web browser.
Based on some of the feedback I have received about Autodesk's fascination with the cloud, I feel inclined to mention: We will continue to offer desktop applications bundled into Suites for years to come; however, eventually you are going to want to do everything from your mobile phone or tablet device. Yes we could port our powerful applications to iPhones and the wide variety of flavors of Android devices, attempting to account for the particulars of each one, or we can make our applications available as services from servers in the cloud with lots of CPU power and memory suited to the job.
The technology preview has ended and was a rousing success! Thanks again to everyone who participated and provided feedback.
Project Pinocchio is now Autodesk Character Generator.
- Autodesk Character Generator features a low quality (free) and higher quality (cloud credits) offering. The higher quality offering costs 5 cloud credits per character independent of the number of options used.
- Non-subscription customers (without 3ds Max nor Maya) will be able to purchase cloud credits just for Autodesk Character Generator via the Autodesk eStore starting on March 28, 2014.
- To expedite Autodesk's transition to the production service, no data was migrated from the technology preview.
It's fantastic to see that technologies make it from the preview stage to production. Your feedback makes this possible. Without your affirmation, these technologies would not continue to see the light of day. Thanks for the light.
Light is alive in the lab.
