I work out of our office on One Market Street in San Francisco. My standup-desk is right across from our Gallery at One Market. One of our newer exhibits is called Powers of Design. It was first featured at the Technology Entertainment & Design (TED) conference last year. Powers of Design depicts the size of everything from the inconceivably small to the mind-blowingly large. I thought I'd cover the exhibit elements, one at a time, over the next few months. I started small and am working my way up.

Jupiter

If the solar system is our neighborhood, then Jupiter is the biggest (and gassiest) kid on the block. A gas giant with a mass 2.5 times that of all other planets in our solar system combined, Jupiter is the third-brightest object in the night sky after the moon and Venus.
Jupiter’s most prominent feature is the Great Red Spot, a storm larger than Earth that has possibly been raging since 1665. Ganymede (the largest of Jupiter’s 64 moons) has a diameter greater than that of Mercury. Although Jupiter dwarfs Earth with a diameter 11 times as great (about 140,000 km) and 1,321 times its volume, it’s considerably less dense and is just 318 times as massive.
Even though Jupiter is by far the biggest planet in our solar system, the sun is 10 times bigger! Based on data from back in the day when the solar system had 9 planets, Shaan Hurley created a blog post about solar.dwg which depicted the orbits to scale. Thanks to Owen Iverson for the reminder.
