I work out of our office on One Market Street in San Francisco. My standup-desk is right across from our Gallery at One Market. One of our newer exhibits is called Powers of Design. It was first featured at the Technology Entertainment & Design (TED) conference last year. Powers of Design depicts the size of everything from the inconceivably small to the mind-blowingly large. I thought I'd cover the exhibit elements, one at a time, over the next few months. I started small and am working my way up.

We truly wish that the HIV virus did not exist on any scale, but to the world’s great sadness this global pandemic resides at 10-7. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (of the retrovirus family) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.
HIV is different in structure from other retroviruses, however. Roughly spherical in shape, it has a diameter of about 120 nm — about 60 times smaller than a red blood cell—and is large for a virus. There is currently no cure for HIV infection. Treatment consists of highly active antiretroviral therapy with promise shown in the area of stem cell transplantation, which remains an investigational area of treatment.
So the HIV virus is 10 times larger than a nano bio-robot that in the future could be used to fight it but 10 times smaller than a blood cell it could infect — makes sense. It's like the story of David and Goliath on two levels with the smaller foe hurting the cell, and hopefully, the smaller robot killing the virus.
