Scottsdale Arabian Library Wins Smart Environment Award

When my son was in 6th grade, he played in a recreational basketball league. Our outdoor practices were on a court near the Scottsdale Arabian Library. Having just relocated to Arizona, I thought the name was unusual. Billed as the west's most western town, each of Scottsdale's libraries is named after a breed of horse. Recently our hometown library was one of three 2008 IIDA/Metropolis Smart Environments Award winners.

Architects Jim Richärd and Kelly Bauer began work in 2003 on the Arabian Library and balanced the local librarians' desire to create an inviting experience with the community’s desire for a building that responded to the desert setting. The Scottsdale City Council had an interest in completing a LEED-rated project. We are always happy when AutoCAD and other Autodesk products help in creating a sustainable environment.

Shrinkwrap Add-in most popular in Belgian Inventor Poll

On the heels of my posting about what's available on the Autodesk Labs site for Autodesk Inventor users, my friend, Stefaan Boel, shared the results of a recent poll he conducted on the Belgian Inventor Wizard site. Stefaan posed the question:

What is important for you?

  • Advanced Simulation
  • Feature Recognition
  • iMap
  • Plastic Features
  • Shrinkwrap
  • 2D to 3D tool

The results were:

Pollalabs

The Shrinkwrap Add-in for Inventor is the most popular. This is great feedback. Thanks for taking the poll and sharing the results.

Autodesk: Sustainability Report

Fotolia_2259183_xs

Our CEO, Carl Bass, was proud to announce the launch of Autodesk’s very first Sustainability Report. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of more than 100 individuals across the company, the report showcases our commitment to sustainability. In reading this report, we hope it will be clear why sustainability is central to Autodesk’s vision of being a great, good, and important company.

Along with the report, Carl was also pleased to announce that for the first time, Autodesk has been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Inclusion in the index is an acknowledgment of our sustainability efforts. The Dow Jones assesses more than 600 applications from North America companies alone, and chooses just 20 percent of the leading sustainability-driven companies to be listed.

Here's Comes the Sun...

Asu_logo

In April we released the Sustainable Materials Assistant for Autodesk Inventor. Autodesk is interested in helping the world be more sustainable. AUGI's own Mike Perry alerted me to the following article:

As an ASU alumnus and parent who pays tuition for an ASU student, I was proud to see what my Sun Devils had done.

Check it out.

Sustainability Examples at the Office

The other day we had a series of Autodesk Labs meetings at our McInnis facility. As part of our day, we held a team building exercise. We divided ourselves into small teams and scoured the building for examples of Autodesk's commitment to operating as an environmentally responsible company. Senior Strategic Designer, Doug Look, led our exercise by providing a framework: POEMS. We were to look for examples of People, Objects, Environment, Messages, and Services related to sustainability. We took some pictures:

People

We meet for lunch in the office cafeteria rather than driving off-campus for lunch.

Image_00125

We use the stairs instead of the elevator.

Objects

1_nowaterbottles

We have replaced disposable water bottles with personal reusable containers.

Image_00127

Our cups are made of compostable materials.

Image_00130

Our disposable forks, spoons, and knives are made of corn and are biodegradable.

Environment

2_people

We turn thermostats up or down to conserve energy.

Image_00124

Our grounds have areas of low water vegetation.

4_hybrid

Our parking lot is full of hybrid, electric, and high efficiency vehicles.

Our cafeteria has shades to reduce energy consumption.

Messages

5_message

We use reclaimed water in our facilities.

We promoted Bike to Work Day on the coffee room bulletin board.

Services

Sustainable Materials Assistant for Autodesk Inventor Now Available

Fotolia_2259183_xs

Inventor Product Manager, Sam Antos, provided me with a new utility that will help Autodesk customers be a little more green. I was happy to place it on the Autodesk Labs site for download:

The Sustainable Materials Assistant for Autodesk Inventor aids you in making responsible material choices that can reduce your design’s environmental impact while still meeting your other requirements. For example, you can get answers to questions:

  • Does my design contain toxic materials?
  • Does my design rely on hazardous materials?
  • Is my design made of recyclable materials?
  • What is my design's overall carbon footprint?

Carbon_footprint

The Sustainable Materials Assistant adds data fields for all the materials that are included in Inventor’s materials library. You can populate these new fields with information about the Toxicity, Regulatory compliance, Recyclability, and Carbon Footprint of any of these materials. Accessible from Inventor’s Bill of Materials Editor, the Sustainability Report analyzes and aggregates the sustainability properties based on the materials and components that comprise a given design option. You can easily output a Sustainability Report to communicate the sustainability of your design.

We are eager to get feedback on this utility. So please share your thoughts with us: labs.iv.sustainable@autodesk.com. Thinking green is alive in the lab.
