Peruse Chapter 12 of Wasim Younis' Simulation Book

 Fotolia_1739577

I got another email from Wasim Younis yesterday. He and I had previously corresponded when he provided feedback on the Advanced Simulation Technology Preview when it was on Autodesk Labs. As noted in a previous blog posting, Wasim recently completed his book on simulation. The book is being promoted on the Manufacturing community website and all members get a 20% discount for preordering the book.

Yasim provided me with a chapter as a PDF file and asked me to share it with my blog readers:

Check it out.

We're cleaning house.

We're making room for new technologies arriving in the coming months.

  • Since the executable for iMap for Inventor expires on April 1, the technology preview has been removed from the Autodesk Labs site.

  • Since the executable for the MEP Analysis Extension for AutoCAD MEP/Revit MEP expires on March 31, the technology preview has been removed from the Autodesk Labs site.

  • Since Autodesk Design Review 2010 is now available, and the Boomless Chameleon Navigation and Wiimote Navigation add-ins were compatible with Design Review 2009, these technology previews have also ended and have been removed from the Autodesk Labs site.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback to Autodesk Labs.

Applying a Pressure that changes from the Surface to the Bottom

A Mr. Richard Feder from Fort Lee, New Jersey wrote in:

I am designing a tank that will be filled with water. I was wondering how to apply a pressure that changes from the surface to the bottom.

Software Quality Assurance Engineer, Hugh Henderson, provided the answer:

At this time there isn't a hydrostatic pressure load in the Advanced Simulation Technology Preview (ASTP). Thank you for the suggestion. Instead there is a workaround that can be used from Inventor Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The same idea can be used in ASTP. It is not perfect, but it does get a meaningful result.

Use pressure and the Split face method. This is analogous to using to the Riemann sum as an estimate for the "area under the curve" in Integral Calculus.

Pressure = density * gravitational acceleration * depth
(P = rho * g * delta_h)

Shot1

Calculate the depth at the centroid of the split face band. In this case, we can neglect the atmospheric pressure, since it acts on the outside of the vessel as well as on free surface of the liquid.

Shot2

Of course, you can get more accurate results by increasing the number of "bands" as the height of the band approaches zero.

Responding to feedback is alive in the lab.

Autodesk Labs: MSD technologies graduate into 2010 product line

Senior Public Relations Manager of the Manufacturing Solutions Division, Clay Helm, sent out a press release yesterday announcing the "Autodesk 2010 Manufacturing Software Demonstrates Power of Digital Prototyping." For Autodesk Labs visitors, much of this will sound very familiar.

New features in the Autodesk Inventor 2010 product line include:

  • Plastic part design and tooling: The Autodesk Inventor product line simplifies the design of high-quality molded part models with automated capabilities for designing injection molds for plastic parts. Thanks to all who provided feedback on the Inventor Plastic Features Technology Preview.

  • Ability to simulate product performance: The Autodesk Inventor 2010 product line provides improved support for motion simulation and static and modal finite element analysis at both the part and assembly level. Thanks to all those who provided feedback on the Advanced Simulation Technology Preview.

  • Design productivity: Continuing to improve usability and productivity, Inventor offers a new user interface that combines an intuitive 3D design environment for creating parts and assemblies with tools that enable engineers to focus on a design’s function to drive the automatic creation of intelligent components such as plastic parts, steel frames, and rotating machinery. Thanks to all who provided feedback on the UI Technology Preview for Inventor 2009.

The press release also mentions:

AutoCAD Inventor LT Suite: Introduced in the 2010 release, this new suite combines Autodesk Inventor LT and AutoCAD LT, one of the world’s top-selling 2D drafting and detailing software, to make it more practical and affordable for mechanical design professionals to start designing in 3D and participate in Digital Prototyping workflows. We appreciate the feedback we received for the Autodesk Inventor LT Technology Preview.

Autodesk Labs - thanks to you, it's working. Celebrating graduating technologies that really make it into the product line is alive in the lab.
