A company called Measureand makes a product known as ShapeTape. The research group at Alias has been working with it. Check it out:

The ShapeTape can be bent and twisted to create 3D surfaces. Working with new input devices to provide customers with creative ways to design is alive in the lab. In the words of Chubby Checker, "Let's twist again like we did last summer." :-)
